Perhaps I should have responded to this before I had my whinge to OS.c about anonymity n prizes.
Until recently I wasn't game enought participate in harbour swims because of the deep water and aggressive nature of Bull Sharks in particular.
But considering all the reportage of last weeks attacks, I reckon the organisers of all events are on notice to keep a vigilant lookout for sharks and well and truly shoe them off with motorised craft. It would only take one attack during a race to have the meeja and probably the pollies get into a tiz and call us a bunch of irresponsible so-and-so's.
So with that comforting thought and the statistical probability of safety in numbers, we've probably never been safer. So I'll be swimming both races at Farm Cove next month. But the "seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care" derby is a bit too long for me just yet.

Thanks for your insightful comments Davo, you put a very convincing case, and have persuaded me to swim on 1 March, despite the pleadings of family and friends who fear the great 2009 Sydney Shark Infestation.
ReplyDeleteSo if I am eaten or maimed, there will be a few not so happy folk hunting you down.... :-)
Ah I did have a fleeting thought early in the season of participating in the Harbour B2B next month. Anyway as it turns out I'm nowhere fit enough and the recent reports have given me a good excuse to put it off for another year.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to train soon for my first Coogee to Bondi 5k end April (with paddlers). There's a couple good longer ocean swims early April N.Steyne & Tamarama.
No doubt even with the extra training I'll be swimming alone with the sharkies at the back of the pack, so I'm looking to improve my chances by recruiting a couple of "non-elite" swimmers to join me on the Coogee-Bondi swim. Target time would be say 1hr50 to 2hrs, + or - swell direction. The goal would be completion, time not so important, so it would make sense to swim together until the finish line is in sight.
I'm usually at Coogee beach Saturday mornings or Botany pool during the week.
